  • Summer Solstice ~ Welcome Sunshine, Hello Fun!!!

For many of us, we have been soaking up the sunshine and enjoying warm summery days already. For others today -- the summer solstice -- marks the beginning of summer time fun. No, it doesn't automatically mean that those of us in the northern hemisphere will always enjoy warm dry days, but for the most part we will! It time of year when we are lifted closer to the sun and receive more of the sun's direct rays. Folks in the Southern hemisphere are beginning their winter and darker days. Tomorrow on June 21st the Arctic circle will enjoy 24 hours of sunshine while the Antarctic Circle will experience 24 hours of darkness. While most of us won't experience 24 hours of sunshine -- today is the longest day of the year for those of us in the US and the rest of the northern hemisphere.

Throughout the ages the summer solstice has been celebrated and anticipated. It is still enthusiastically celebrated all around the world.  Summer  also means more time spent outside enjoying family BBQs and picnics, camping, hiking, beach trips, vacations, road trips, water parks, amusement parks, berry picking and so much more!!! There just so much fun to be had and we've only got a few short month to do it -- so go out and seize the summer!!!

  • Pearls ~ The Birthstone for June!

The month of June marks the official start of summer -- and folks that are born in the month of June are very fortunate to have the beautiful pearl designated as their birthstone. There are two other acceptable birthstones for June as well, alexandrite and moonstone. Since pearl is the most commonly used birthstone and there is so much interesting information about them we are just going to focus on those.

    What is a Pearl?

A pearl is produced when an irritant is lodged within the tissue of a live shelled mollusk. A pearl is naturally produced when an irritant such as a piece of sand or a tiny bug gets into the mollusk’s shell. The mollusk then secretes layer upon layer of nacre (calcium carbonate) which covers the irritant and over time produces a pearl. Most pearls on the market today are cultured, which means a person actually puts the irritant – usually a piece of mother of pearl - into the mollusk’s shell, instead of it spontaneously ending up in there.

    Types of Pearls

There are many different types of pearls. Each is unique and special in its own way.

Natural -- a natural pearl is one that occurs spontaneously in nature. an irritant makes it's way into the shell of a mollusk which then begins to secrete nacre and a pearl is formed.

Cultured -- a cultured pearl is one in which a person puts an irritant (usually mother of pearl) into a mollusks shell to facilitate the creation of a pearl and the mollusk still does the rest.

Freshwater -- freshwater pearls can be found in mollusks living in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. and other unsalted waters.

Saltwater -- saltwater pearls are found in mollusks living in the salty oceans or other salty sources.

Tahitian --  these pearls are sometimes referred to as black pearls and are typically 8mm-14mm in size. They are produced by a black lipped oyster. These oysters produce pearls in varying dark colors with hints of pink, blue and green.

South Sea --  are grown in warm waters and similar to Tahitian pearls. They range in size from 9mm-20mm. While they are typically white, they may include hues of gold, silver, or pink.

Pearls are graded and priced based on their luster, size, shape, markings (blemishes) and color.

    Care

You must be very careful with your pearl birthstone jewelry. If the pearls come in contact with chemicals - even those found in hairspray, perfume, cleaning products, chlorine, etc. - it can dull the luster and even wear away the nacre. Always put your pearls on last, right before heading out the door and only clean them with a very soft cloth and warm water.

If you know someone who was born this month get them their birthstone. Don't forget, pearls are also perfect for weddings!!!

  • Sigma Delta Tau ~ Sorority Spotlight

    Sigma Delta Tau ~ ΣΔΤ

Open Motto: "One hope of many people."
    Mascot: Teddy Bear
    Jewel: Lapis Lazuli
    Colors: CafèAu Lait and Blue
    Flower: Golden Tea Rose

The Sigma Delta Tau sorority was founded March 25th, 1917 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. It was originally named Sigma Delta Phi but was quickly changed when the founders learned that those letters already belonged to another sorority. Although Sigma Delta Tau was founded by seven Jewish women; Dora Bloom Turteltaub, Amy Apfel Tishman, Marian Gerber Greenberg, Grace Srenco Grossman, Inez Dane Ross, Regene Freund Cohane, Lenore Rubinow, there is no religious requirement for membership and the sorority is not affiliated with any particular religious organization.

During that time in history, higher education for women was still a relatively new development and the founders faced struggles because of that; as well as discrimination by other Greek organizations of the time based on their religious affiliation. This is according to the official Sigma Delta Tau website. These obstacles to strengthened their bond and their determination to create a supportive sisterhood to help each other and other women succeed.

    MISSION STATEMENT ~ www.sigmadeltatau.com

The mission of Sigma Delta Tau is to enrich the lifetime experience of women of similar ideals, to build lasting friendships, and to foster personal growth.  Sigma Delta Tau shall encourage each member to reach her fullest potential by providing intellectual, philanthropic, leadership and social opportunities within a framework of mutual respect and high ethical standards.

To achieve these goals, we will:

    • Strive for excellence by providing the best possible service to each chapter and each member.
    • Join as partners with colleges and universities in the pursuit of academic success for our members.
    • Perpetuate our values and traditions while adapting to meet the challenges of the future.
    • Promote lifetime commitment and active involvement as Sigma Delta Tau alumnae.

Helping others is a big part of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority sisterhood. In 1982 Sigma Delta Tau adopted Prevent Child Abuse America as their national philanthropy. They contribute their time, talents and treasure to helping this worthy case. In addition, Sigma Delta Tau also helps Jewish Women International and their literacy initiative; as well as Women for Women International.

  • Wedding Cake Tips ~ Getting Started

One thing that just about every wedding has in common is wedding cake! The wedding guest's mouths water in anticipation of the traditional cake cutting ceremony. Over the years, cakes have evolved to include a wide assortment of flavors and amazingly artistic designs. Don't worry, if you still like the classic white cake with delicious butter cream frosting that can certainly be done -- but  more and more brides are looking to impress their guests with their beautifully extravagant and yummy dessert. If you have begun planning your wedding you may have several questions about selecting a baker and a wedding cake. Today on the Charming Chick Blog we hope to provide you with some great tips to help you get started.

    Just Start Planning

Before you even think about the cake it's really a fantastic idea to get some other things figured out first. Your venue, colors, dress, decor, flowers, etc. may all have an impact on the style of cake you decide to order. Picking the cake should be one of the last things on your list of things to order. However, you can still do some research to find a baker.

    Do Your Research

You'll want to make sure you do some research to find the right baker for you. Ask friends, family and wedding professionals who they would recommend then schedule appointments to visit a few of them. While you certainly don't need to be an expert, it is a great idea to have some knowledge of wedding cake terminology. Knowing your butter cream from your fondant and your gum paste from your marzipan is really great. Check out this glossary of wedding cake terms that the knowledgeable folks at TheKnot.com put together, it can help you to decide what you want and assist you in explaining it clearly to your baker.

    Set Your Budget

If you are trying to stay within a certain budget it is a good idea to keep that in mind as you make decisions about your cake. Find out how much per piece you will be paying. If you are having a small wedding this might not be a huge issue but the more guests you have the more cake you will need. Also keep in mind that certain decorations and details can vary greatly in price. Get a clear idea about what you want and then see what can be done to get your vision to fit your budget.

  • Pi Beta Phi ~ Sorority Spotlight

    Pi Beta Phi ~ ΠΒΦ

    Mascot: Angel
    Symbol: Arrow
    Colors: Wine and Silver Blue
    Flower: Wine Carnation

On April 28, 1867 the women's fraternity of Pi Beta Phi was founded at Monmouth college in Monmouth, Illinois. It was found by 12 very innovative and intelligent women; Clara Brownlee Hutchinson, Libbie Brook Gaddis, Emma Brownlee Kilgore, Margaret Campbell, Rosa Moore, Ada Bruen Grier, Nancy Black Wallace, Jennie Horne Turnbull, Jennie Nicol, Inez Smith Soule, Fannie Thomson, and Fannie Whitenack Libbey. They were admired the benefits that collegiate men belonging to secret societies enjoyed and wanted the same for them and for other women as well, so they decided to form Pi Beta Phi. During this time in history, there were very few universities that even allowed women on campus, so the women who blazed the trail for all who were to come after, needed the support and sisterhood that a women's fraternity would provide both on and off campus.

The core values of this women's fraternity, according to the official Pi Beta Phi website are:

    Core Values

    • Integrity
    • Lifelong Commitment
    • Honor and Respect
    • Personal and Intellectual Growth
    • Philanthropic Service to Others
    • Sincere Friendship

Philanthropy is a HUGE part of Pi Beta Phi life and always has been. They were the first to support a Canadian philanthropy and they have partnered with a number of literacy organizations to donate their time, money and resources to help support this important cause. According to the Pi Beta Phi website, their involvement in literacy "...dates back 100 years  to the founding of a Settlement School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Pi Phi was solely responsible for all education in Gatlinburg until the 1940s and continued to provide educational and financial assistance until 1967."Once the community of Gatlinburg took over the operations of the settlement school Pi Beta Phi moved onto focusing their efforts on other literacy programs. Their foundation helps their organization to grow, assists other Pi Beta Phi sisters and provides scholarships.
