    • Wedding Cake Tips -- Choosing A Baker

Selecting a wedding cake can be an exciting --  but daunting task. There are so many things to consider.  The main goal of most couples, is to ensure that their cake tastes great and looks fabulous -- but how do you make sure that this happens? Other questions you may have are; how big of a cake will you need, what sort of topper should you select, and when should you start looking for a baker?

This week at the Charming Chick Blog, we will to offer you some tips to help you get the wedding cake you desire -- without the hassle.  Let's start with some tips on choosing the right baker.

      Calling All Bakers

You should begin your search for the right baker -- about 6-8 weeks in advance. You'll want to call to schedule a tasting; so you can sample the flavors that most appeal to you. This way you can be sure that they taste just as delicious as you hope they will. It is not uncommon to have a few different combinations for your cake. For example -- if you have a 3-tiered cake, you might decide to make each tier a different flavor; this gives your guests some variety.

During your tasting appointment, be sure to bring in any photos you have; which will help illustrate how you envision your dream wedding cake. You'll also want to bring in color and fabric samples, so the baker has the best chance at matching your color theme.

Another important thing you need to do -  is ask for - and check references. Speaking with other brides about their experience with your potential baker, can really help you to decide if they are right for you. Also, make sure the baker you select is licensed and that they carry liability insurance. Ask to see photos of previous wedding cakes that your baker has done. You may even get other ideas for how you would like your cake to look.

In addition, you'll want to ask about their delivery services. There is usually a fee associated with it, but well worth the money. It is very difficult to transport and properly set up a wedding cake. Let the experts handle it, and you will not be sorry!

Remember: bakers and even your caterer don't usually supply a cake knife and server unless you ask. Many brides decide to purchase their own set because they make wonderful keepsakes and can be used by other members of the family on their wedding day.

Next time we'll talk toppers -- cake toppers that is!
