Crafford, Frances Yancey Smith, Ruby Leigh Orgain and the Virgina State Female Normal School. Several of the women met together regularly. They shared beliefs, education and a sisterhood. They enjoyed each other so much that they wanted to figure out a way that they would be tied to one another forever. According to Wikipedia Maud Jones wrote: “For a whole year before our sorority was established, the need of such an organization was strongly felt. There were six or seven of us who used to frequently meet together and talk over and try to devise some way by which we could unite into a helpful and congenial band. We knew we sadly needed something, but we had no idea how that something was to be found. The beginning of session 1898–1899 our little crowd again at the Normal and just as eager as before, if not more, to find something to satisfy our desires.” The women then took steps to form an organization that would help keep them together and help other women form lifelong bonds. It took a year to get it officially approved but after working to get everything completed Zeta Tau Alpha came to be.

During the time in history when Sigma Sigma Sigma (aka Tri Sigma) was founded, higher education for women was quite controversial. As one might imagine, it was not an easy time for women who sought higher education. Many teachers and other students made it quite difficult at times. However, at the State Female Normal School in Farmville, VA opened it's doors to women and teacher education in 1890. In the fall of 1897 eight students of  -- Margaret Batten, Louise Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins, and Lucy Wright formed a special bond while studying for their future teaching careers and formed a secret society. Lelia Scott and Lucy Wright led the first meetings of their secret society, the S.S.S. Club. On April 20, 1898, these women officially announced the founding of the Greek letter society known as Sigma Sigma Sigma.

According to the official Sigma sigma Sigma website the Tri Sigma's Mission, Vision, and Values Statements are as follows:

    Mission Statement

To establish among its members a perpetual bond of friendship, to develop in them strong womanly character, and to impress upon them high standards of conduct.

    Vision Statement

Sigma Sigma Sigma inspires exceptional life long learning and friendships.

    Values Statement

Sigma Sigma Sigma reaffirms its long standing core values of wisdom, power, faith, hope and love.

Philanthropy is also very important to Tri Sigmas. The Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation was founded in 1984 to fund philanthropic, educational and charitable purposes that help with leadership, the advancement of women and play therapy. The Robbie Page Memorial was founded in 1954, shortly after the Tri Sigma National President's son. Robbie Page, passed away from  bulbar polio. Initially the foundation helped fund polio research and today it fund items related to play therapy such as play rooms, libraries and programs to help children who are hospitalized long-term. Helping children is a huge priority for Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Telling the world that your are expecting a baby can be a very exciting and fun thing to do. Whether you are looking to share the baby news with your husband, parents or lose friends and family, there are ways to make your announcement even more memorable and special. When the time comes to reveal your big news refer to this list for some fun ideas.

    1. Get a charm that says "Grandma" and present it your your Mom. This is an especially great way to share the baby news if she doesn't have any grandchildren yet. She might be a little confused but soon she'll be beaming with joy!

    2. Wear a t-shirt that reads "Baby on Board" and see how long it takes people to notice.

    3. To tell you husband the exciting baby news, and/or parents you have your your first born wear an "I'm going to be a Big Sister/Brother" shirt.

    4. Take a photo of your positive pregnancy test and slip it into a current book, magazine or the sports page of the morning newspaper for an unexpected surprise.

    5. Invite people over for a baby themed dinner where you can serve things like baby carrots, baby back ribs, have baby corn in the salad, babybel cheese, baby potatoes, etc. For a little extra fun you could put out a plate of cinnamon buns with a sign that says "There's a bun in the oven" and see if your guests catch on.

    6. Another way to share your baby news is to frame an ultrasound photo and wrap it for your parents to open. They'll understand what is it very quickly! If you want to share the news with other friends you can have photo cards made and send them out with a message "Coming February 2013" or whenever your expected due date is.

    7. To announce the big news that you are expecting to your husband, you can hand him a Daddy Diaper Bag or a book for the Dad-to-Be Like "My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guys Guide to Pregnancy"  or "Dude Your Gonna Be A Dad!"

  • Back to School ~ Celebrate the New School Year!

It's hard to believe, but in a few short weeks millions of kids will be heading back to school and some are heading back even sooner than that! Going back to school can be so much fun but the first day can often cause kids to have a case of the jitters. However, if you make back to school an occasion worth celebrating that can really help to get kids even more excited about the coming school year! Today on the Charming Chick Blog we will give you some tips for creating a fantastic back to school buzz.

For all the instructions on how to put this super smart back to school party together
    visit The Design Dazzle Blog!!!

    1. Plan a Back to School Party

So often we think of throwing parties to celebrate the last day of school but not the first day. Well, first days are very important and that deserves a party too! So why not invite a few of your child's favorite friends from school over to kick off the school year in style! There are so many things you can do and make in preparation for the event and we have pinned just a few fun ideas on our newest Pinterest board: Creative Back to School Ideas.

This and LOTS of other creative lunch and craft ideas can be found
    on Lisa Storm's Blog

    2. Make a Special Lunch

If you get a little creative with your child's lunch it can really set the tone for a great school year. Older kids may not appreciate your creativity but if you know your child and know they'll love it go for it. For older kids who may not appreciate an animal shaped sandwich or ants on a log, you can always discreetly write a note telling them you love them and you hope they are having a great day and tuck it into their lunch box. A great site (beside the one mentioned above) is one of my personal favorites Super Healthy Kids.

For directions on how to make this adorable apple cake pops for back to school visit the Bakerella blog!!!!

    3. Welcome them home from school with a sweet treat!

The kids will probably be excitedly telling you all about how their first day of school went, how they like their teacher, old friends that got to see and new friends that they made. Why not make this conversation even more enjoyable by sitting around the table and serving a delicious treat with some wholesome milk? Creating something truly special will let your kids know that you missed them, you hope they had a wonderful day and you are so glad they are home.

  • Pinterest Boards: Not Just for Ladies, Guys Like It Too

My husband is under the misconception that Pinterest is just for the ladies. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's really for everyone. For instance if your guy is into action movies, superheros and comics there is a TON of stuff out there. Think of all the great boards that guys could come up with related to cars, videos games, their favorite sports teams and so much more. I know that many ladies are interested in these things as well -- I have a boards of my favorite football team of course :) The point is, if you are a guy and the word Pinterest has you envisioning frilly women's fashion, a thousand pages of nail art, and tons of wedding and baby stuff -- well yes, there is a lot of that. However, depending on who's boards you follow -- you will find a lot of stuff you love.

Pinterest is a very visually pleasing site and when you follow boards or people and you see things you like you can "pin" those items to one of your boards. Let's say you are looking for dinner ideas and you see a pot roast that looks delicious. When you "repin" this photo from the board you see it on aren't simply pinning a picture of the most mouth-watering pot roast you have ever seen, you are actually pinning the website where you should be able to find the recipe for this dish. Putting together a Pinterest board of Grilling allows quick and easy access to recipes to make. How many times have you been surfing the web and you end up at a site but you have no idea how you got there or how to get back. You could always bookmark it to your computer but pinning it on Pinterest allows you to categorize items AND desplay a photo. It's and that's certainly not just something only females can enjoy, so come on guys -- if you haven't tried Pinterest yet you really should. As a side note, it also helps you find great gift ideas for your gal. Just peek at her boards and you'll never be at a loss for what you get her, because if it's on her boards it's certainly something she will love!!!

Be sure to check out all of our Charming Chick Pinterest boards! We are constantly updating and editing items to keep things fresh.

  • Jewelry Styling Tips and Tricks

Jewelry is so much more than simple accessories or an after thought that you add to an outfit before you head out the door. Jewelry is like the icing on a cake -- for without it an outfit may be beautiful -- but let's face it, it's also a bit blase. Jewelry can add interest, a pop or two of color, and dazzling accents. Here are a few jewelry styling tips to help you choose the right pieces, for the right occasion and they will help you make the right statement.

    Jewelry Styling Tips

Mix and Match ~ Have fun with your jewelry wear chains with pearls, mix yellow metals with white, pink or green metals, wear a rainbow of gemstones. There is really not right or wrong -- be bold, be daring be YOU!

Take the Old and Make it New ~ Do you have jewelry that you have inherited or maybe the style is completely outdated -- and not in a totally chic, vintage kind of way. Did you know that you can take your jewelry to a custom jeweler who can turn your precious metals, gemstones and diamonds into brand new, redesigned pieces of jewelry that you will LOVE to wear! Make sure you find a reputable jeweler, so do your homework and you'll have a great experience.

Personalize It ~ Jewelry with a personalized touch is a hot trend but it's classic and elegant as well. At Charming Chick we have a vast selection of personalized necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets. These make fantastic statement pieces when you purchase then for yourself and they can also beautiful gifts that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Add a POP of Color ~ Use jewelry to turn your little black dress into something spectacular. You can echo the the colors of each season if you like or echo hues in your ensemble. Create an eye-catching statement by coordinating your jewelry, hand bag, and shoes. You can also thread colorful ribbons and fabrics through wide linked jewelry for added variety.

  • Sigma Kappa Spotlight

In 1873-74  five young women founded Sigma Kappa at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. 1871 was the first year that Colby College allowed women to attend equally. Mary Caffery Lowe attended for two years as the only female at the school -- what a trail blazer!!! Finally in 1873 four other women came to the school -- Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida May Fuller Price, Francis Elliot Mann Hall and Louise Helen Coburn. During this time in history it was very difficult for women to gain admittance to a college and once they were they faced discrimination by college staff and male students. Naturally, the five women spent a lot of time together and decided they would like to start a literary and social society -- Sigma Kappa.  They were first required to submit a constitution and bylaws, which they did. On November 9th, 1874 the women received a letter stating their petition was approved and Sigma Kappa  became official! That date has been celebrated as Founder's day throughout Sigma Kappa's history.

According to the official Sigma Kappa website the purpose and values of the sorority are as follows:

    Purpose Statement

The purpose of Sigma Kappa Sorority is to provide women lifelong opportunities and support for social, intellectual, and spiritual development by bringing women together to positively impact our communities.

    Values

Our values: personal growth, friendship, service and loyalty; bound by a promise.

It is also very important to the members of Sigma Kappa to give back to the community, help fellow sisters and to national organizations as well. Their philanthropies include; Alzheimer's Research, Gerontology, Maine Sea Coast Mission and Inherit the Earth.

  • Old Wives Tales ~ Predicting Your Baby's Gender

Are you finding out the gender of your baby? We are doing something just for fun on the Charming Chick blog today - we are looking at Old Wives Tales that were use to predict the gender of a baby. Long before ultrasounds, women had to use certain signs, symptoms and other things to try to predict the sex of their baby. The good news was there was a 50/50 chance that they would be right. I'm not sure how scientifically accurate these methods are but if you opted not to find our your baby' gender but tried to do a little guessing with some of these methods we would love to hear from you! Of course, if it's just killing you to know your baby's sex the ultrasound is pretty accurate -- but what if your little one is too squirmy or shy? Well then, this post just may help you -- but it's really just for fun :)

Old Wives Tales for Predicting Gender

    1. If you carry high you could be having a girl. If you carry low blue is in your future.

    2. Craving sweets means pink. Craving salty and/or sour foods means blue.

    3. Okay this one isn't an old wives tales, it's an old Mayan tale. They believed that if the mother's age at the time of conception and the year of conception were either both odd or both even she would have a girl. If one was odd and one was even she would have a boy. This was not true for me. How about you?

    4. The key to gender prediction is...well..a KEY! That's right. If you lay a key in front of a pregnant woman and ask her to pick it up that can predict the sex of her baby. If she picks it up by the narrow end a girl is in her future. Picking it up by the wide end means boy!

    5. Skin break outs, oily hair, a lot of morning sickness and being very tired is thought to mean the momma is having a girl. This is because it is said that the girl steals the mother's beauty. If momma looks great, feels great and just glows -- she's sure to have a bouncing baby boy.

    6. This one I have actually heard a lot. If you take your wedding ring off and place it on a string then hold it over your belly, it will start to move. If it goes in a circle then bring out the blue. If it swings back and forth then pink it shall be.

    7. Okay this last one will sound really odd but I have actually seen it mentioned on several pregnancy websites. Combine a tablespoon of Drano with a small cup of your urine. If it turns green it's a girl and if it's blue it's a boy.

Are their any other old wives tales you've heard of for predicting gender? We'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.
