  • Old Wives Tales ~ Predicting Your Baby's Gender

Are you finding out the gender of your baby? We are doing something just for fun on the Charming Chick blog today - we are looking at Old Wives Tales that were use to predict the gender of a baby. Long before ultrasounds, women had to use certain signs, symptoms and other things to try to predict the sex of their baby. The good news was there was a 50/50 chance that they would be right. I'm not sure how scientifically accurate these methods are but if you opted not to find our your baby' gender but tried to do a little guessing with some of these methods we would love to hear from you! Of course, if it's just killing you to know your baby's sex the ultrasound is pretty accurate -- but what if your little one is too squirmy or shy? Well then, this post just may help you -- but it's really just for fun :)

Old Wives Tales for Predicting Gender

    1. If you carry high you could be having a girl. If you carry low blue is in your future.

    2. Craving sweets means pink. Craving salty and/or sour foods means blue.

    3. Okay this one isn't an old wives tales, it's an old Mayan tale. They believed that if the mother's age at the time of conception and the year of conception were either both odd or both even she would have a girl. If one was odd and one was even she would have a boy. This was not true for me. How about you?

    4. The key to gender prediction is...well..a KEY! That's right. If you lay a key in front of a pregnant woman and ask her to pick it up that can predict the sex of her baby. If she picks it up by the narrow end a girl is in her future. Picking it up by the wide end means boy!

    5. Skin break outs, oily hair, a lot of morning sickness and being very tired is thought to mean the momma is having a girl. This is because it is said that the girl steals the mother's beauty. If momma looks great, feels great and just glows -- she's sure to have a bouncing baby boy.

    6. This one I have actually heard a lot. If you take your wedding ring off and place it on a string then hold it over your belly, it will start to move. If it goes in a circle then bring out the blue. If it swings back and forth then pink it shall be.

    7. Okay this last one will sound really odd but I have actually seen it mentioned on several pregnancy websites. Combine a tablespoon of Drano with a small cup of your urine. If it turns green it's a girl and if it's blue it's a boy.

Are their any other old wives tales you've heard of for predicting gender? We'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.

  • Bridesmaids Tips ~ Before you Say YES!

Many things come to mind when we think about bridesmaids; giggling girlfriends shopping for dresses, a lot of elegant bridal parties in preparation for the bride's big day, a luxurious and exciting bachelorette party -- fun, fun and more fun!!! It is such an honor to be asked, especially if you are being asked by a dear friend or close family member to be one of her bridesmaids. You may be willing to invest much more time and money than if the bride is one of best friends -- but what if she isn't? Either way, before you say "YES!" you'll definitely want to consider some very important things first, and on the Charming Chick blog today we want to give future bridesmaids the information they need.

Weddings are  time to celebrate love, friendship and all of the wonderful joys that uniting two people and two families can bring. However, there are other things that can throw a bit of a wrench into all the joy. If you are prepared for the things that can happen, then you'll know how to deal with it and whether or not you are up to taking on the duties and costs associated with becoming a bridesmaid.

The High Cost of Being a Bridesmaid

Bridesmaids to have to pay their way for a lot of things, so being a bridesmaid can get expensive. You may think you'll only be out the price of a dress (which can cost a fortune if you have a bride with expensive taste) and shoes -- but there is so many other things to consider. Here is a list of potential items bridesmaids may have to pay for:

    *bridal shower

    *bachelorette party

    *wedding gift

    *travel and lodging expenses

    *and more....

This can add up to be $1500 but often more! If your friend is frugal or at least conscious of trying to keep the costs low for the wedding party -- give her a BIG hug and tell her thank you. Spending $1500-$3000 might not seem like much to you, especially if you are headed for a tropical destination wedding but for many bridesmaids that is a huge expense. That being said, there are some very generous brides who will pay for many things for their bridesmaids, but that is the exception and not the rule.

Communicate openly about your budget restrictions and if you don't want to go into debt -- well, gracefully and humbly bow out. There are always other duties you can help out with.

    Bridesmaids Have Many Duties

As a bridesmaid you do need to know that you will expected to help out with some of the wedding activities. You must show up to all the pre-wedding parties and you will also be expected to help plan some of them, especially if you are the Maid of Honor. You will also be expected to assist the bride in any way possible the day of her wedding but she may also ask for your help in putting some wedding projects together as well.  After the wedding you may need to help gather the gifts, the bride's dress, tuxedos, etc. If you don't think you have enough time to commit to such things you might want to consider declining the invitation to serve. However, if the bride means a lot to you -- you can probably find the time.

Being a bridesmaid is both an honor and a lot of fun. Just make sure you are comfortable with the financial and time commitments involved before you say yes. If you think about things things before being asked then you won't have that awkward silence that can make you both uncomfortable and potentially strain your friendship.

  • Independence Day ~ Fourth of July Fun Facts

Happy Fourth of July!!!! For many, today will be filled with fun, food and fireworks. To make this Independence Day even more exciting, you can share some little known Fourth of July Trivia with your friends, family, neighbors and anyone else you cross paths with today!!! Enjoy...

    Fourth of July Fun Facts

    * On the Fourth of July in 1778 General George Washington marked Independence Day with an artillery salute and a double ration of rum for his soldiers.

    * In 1779 the first "official" use of the term Independence Day was used.

    * The first Fourth of July celebration was held at the White House in 1804.

    * Benjamin Franklin wanted to declare the turkey as the national bird but he was over ruled. The national bird of the United States is of course the majestic Bald Eagle -- but the turkey plays a very important role too!

*On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C., to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote.

    * Three U.S. Presidents died on the 4th of July. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (former adversaries) died within hours of each other on July 4, 1826. James Monroe died July 4, 1831.

    * In 1870 July 4th was declared an unpaid federal holiday but in 1938 congress changed it to a PAID Federal holiday!

    * The names of those who signed of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.

All of us at Charming Chick would like to wish you an yours a very fun and safe Fourth of July. If you are looking for some last minute inspiration for your Independence Day BBQ check out our Fourth of July board on Pinterest!!!

  • How to Clean and Care for Your Pearls and Gemstone Jewelry

You wouldn't drive your car without ever getting it washed, putting gas in it, or taking it in for oil and a tune-up -- would you? Well, owning precious metals, pearls and gemstone jewelry  requires care if you want to keep it in like new condition. It doesn't require too much time and you'll be saving yourself some money in the long run.

So, how often should you clean your jewelry? Ideally, you should set aside one day a week to clean the jewelry you wear most often on a regular basis. It usually only takes a couple of minutes and it's well worth the time and effort to get your metal and gemstones sparkling once again. You probably took a lot of time and care in selecting just the right piece -- so keeping it the same condition it was when you purchased it should seem like a good idea.

You may already know that keeping your jewelry clean and caring for it, is important -- but did you know that you can't treat all jewelry the same?

Pearls are very delicate and you should never use a harsh jewelry cleaner or a cleaner specifically designed for silver to clean your precious pearls! Most of the time just using warm water and a soft cloth is all it takes to remove debris that has collected on your pearls. Another tip to preserving your pearls and keeping them clean is to let them be the last thing you put on as you are getting ready and the first thing you take off when you get home. Things like hairspray, perfumes, lotions, etc. can damage pearls or cause a build up which inhibits their luster and causes them to need cleaned more often.

Metals like gold and platinum can be cleaned with a regular jewelry cleaner or a mild detergent. Most gemstones can also be cleaned the same way however, if you are using an ultrasonic cleaner some gemstones such as; emeralds, opals, pearls and aquamarine should not be cleaned with this machine because they may become damaged.

At Charming Chick we are known for our striking, high quality sterling silver pieces. Because of this we feel it is especially important to give you detailed information about caring for and cleaning your sterling silver jewelry. It should not be treated like gold because sterling silver has a unique characteristic to it. When silver reacts with the sulfur in the air it oxidizes and leaves a black tarnish behind. We have created an entire sterling silver education page -- Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry. Here you will find detailed information on how to clean, care for and store your sterling silver jewelry.

  • Parenting Tips ~ 7 Reasons Your Baby will Cry

If you are a new parent,  you are probably learning that babies cry for a variety of reasons and at first it can really be difficult to decode the message they are trying to send you. Since babies can’t say "Hey! Mom and dad I'm hungry!" Their crying lets you know that they need something. No parent wants to hear their child cry. It can be heartbreaking to listen to, so time is of the essence when it comes to figuring out the issue and addressing it. Of course, you want your baby to be happy and comfortable once more. Here are some of the most common reasons your baby might be crying and what you can do to soothe them.

Hungry – This is one of the most common cries and probably the one you will get to know quickly. Time can get away from new parents, especially if you haven't had an opportunity to establish a schedule. So, even though it seems like you just fed your baby, it may have been awhile. If they are crying and show hunger signs like; smacking their lips, sucking on their fists or rooting it’s probably time for a feeding.

Diaper's Full – Some babies are not bothered at all by a wet or soiled diaper -- but others can’t stand being even the tiniest bit wet. When you baby is crying this should be one of the first things you check -- it’s a pretty easy fix.

Sleepy Baby and/or Over Stimulated – Babies will cry if they are tired or overstimulated. If you have tried feeding them, checked their diaper and all is well in those areas, it may be time for a nap. Babies need a lot of sleep so it is not unusual that those cries may be coming from a tired little one. Also, if you have been out visiting and your baby has been in a new place being passed round from person to person they may just be a bit overstimulated and need to rest. Try swaddling or move to a quite location where baby isn’t being inundated with lights noise and people.

Too Hot or Too Cold – A crying baby could be trying to tell you that they are too hot or too cold. Most newborns like to be warm and snuggled -- but if they are snuggled up and crying, it could signal they are a bit too warm. Often babies will cry when you are changing their clothes or getting them into a bath because they simply feel too cold.

Tummy Trouble – Sometimes babies simply need to burp or have a gas bubble. They can also have colic or have other tummy issues. Sometimes trying to burp or gently stretching baby’s legs out and in will help release the pressure. If they cry a lot after feedings, talk to their doctor.

Getting new Chompers – If your baby is a few months old they could be teething. Even before the first tooth breaks through, teeth can be shifting and moving under the gums and causing discomfort. Giving them a teething toy to chew on can help soothe the pain. You can also try using a teething gel or teething tablets

A Little Under the Weather – Your baby could be crying because they don’t feel well. Check to see if your baby has a fever or seems like they are coming down with something. If they are lethargic or show any other signs that make you concerned, call their pediatrician.

  • Pearls ~ The Birthstone for June!

The month of June marks the official start of summer -- and folks that are born in the month of June are very fortunate to have the beautiful pearl designated as their birthstone. There are two other acceptable birthstones for June as well, alexandrite and moonstone. Since pearl is the most commonly used birthstone and there is so much interesting information about them we are just going to focus on those.

    What is a Pearl?

A pearl is produced when an irritant is lodged within the tissue of a live shelled mollusk. A pearl is naturally produced when an irritant such as a piece of sand or a tiny bug gets into the mollusk’s shell. The mollusk then secretes layer upon layer of nacre (calcium carbonate) which covers the irritant and over time produces a pearl. Most pearls on the market today are cultured, which means a person actually puts the irritant – usually a piece of mother of pearl - into the mollusk’s shell, instead of it spontaneously ending up in there.

    Types of Pearls

There are many different types of pearls. Each is unique and special in its own way.

Natural -- a natural pearl is one that occurs spontaneously in nature. an irritant makes it's way into the shell of a mollusk which then begins to secrete nacre and a pearl is formed.

Cultured -- a cultured pearl is one in which a person puts an irritant (usually mother of pearl) into a mollusks shell to facilitate the creation of a pearl and the mollusk still does the rest.

Freshwater -- freshwater pearls can be found in mollusks living in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. and other unsalted waters.

Saltwater -- saltwater pearls are found in mollusks living in the salty oceans or other salty sources.

Tahitian --  these pearls are sometimes referred to as black pearls and are typically 8mm-14mm in size. They are produced by a black lipped oyster. These oysters produce pearls in varying dark colors with hints of pink, blue and green.

South Sea --  are grown in warm waters and similar to Tahitian pearls. They range in size from 9mm-20mm. While they are typically white, they may include hues of gold, silver, or pink.

Pearls are graded and priced based on their luster, size, shape, markings (blemishes) and color.

You must be very careful with your pearl birthstone jewelry. If the pearls come in contact with chemicals - even those found in hairspray, perfume, cleaning products, chlorine, etc. - it can dull the luster and even wear away the nacre. Always put your pearls on last, right before heading out the door and only clean them with a very soft cloth and warm water.

If you know someone who was born this month get them their birthstone. Don't forget, pearls are also perfect for weddings!!!
