  • Fall's Newest Color: Yellow

Posted on August 22, 2008 by Jen

I have to admit that when I think of yellow, especially pale pastel yellow, I definitely would not normally think of fall fashion.  However, this fall yellow has become extremely popular, and should remain so throughout winter.  Maybe it's because it looks so good with black or brown... Maybe it's because it is so incredibly versitile, from a day at work to a night on the town...  Whatever the reason, I'm definitely liking this new fall trend.

Broke and Beautiful has put together some amazing outfits featuring yellow that are affordable, trendy and, did I mention affordable?!  It's also neat that she paired a spring dress with pants for the fall/winter.  You'll get some great ideas on how to incorporate yellow into your wardrobe.

I like pairing a pale yellow with black or brown accessories, like the ones pictured below.  I've picked these necklaces, bracelets and earrings because they are incredibly affordable - all are currently selling at just $6.99!  These would make the perfect addition to the one the affordable yellow outfits that Broke and Beautiful mentions.

  • Fall Wedding Jewelry

Posted on August 18, 2008 by Jen

While most wedding jewelry is classic and timeless, each season I see some exciting trends in wedding jewelry. This fall, the trend is dramatic wedding jewelry to match those dramatic fall wedding colors. Think long chandelier earrings, thick cuff bangle bracelets, and multi-stranded necklaces.

Another fall trend is not so trendy at all: vintage wedding jewelry. What a great way to incorporate "something old" into your wedding attire. Maybe it's Mom's pearls or Grandma's cameo. It doesn't even have to be "really" vintage - you can steal the style with vintage fashion jewelry, which is much more affordable for brides on a budget!

  • Fall Wedding Colors

Posted on August 14, 2008 by Jen

One of the hottest colors for Fall weddings this year is orange.  There are tons of ways to bring this color in to your wedding ceremony and wedding reception to add a touch of fall elegance to your wedding.

For some great ideas on how to incorporate orange into your fall wedding, check out this great orange wedding inspiration board.

And of course, you don't have to make the entire color palette orange! Try mixing in browns, greens, and blues for a beautiful mix of fall colors.  I've also seen some beautiful flower bouquets that mixed peach and orange for a more subtle look.

  • Beading A Bracelet: How to Determine the Right Length

Posted on August 12, 2008 by Jen

For many of you, beading has become a fun hobby and a way to customize your own unique jewelry. One question that I hear a lot is how to determine what length to make a bracelet. I've compiled some hints to help you figure out what bracelet length is right for you when beading a bracelet.

Basically you will want to make sure that you are taking into account the diameter of the beads that you plan to use, since this is going to be a majority of the bracelet. This will also help you figure out how many beads to buy. Start by measuring your wrist, leaving a little slack for a comfortable fit.
Next you'll subtract the length of the clasp, toggle, etc. The result is the desired bead length for your bracelet.

To assure that a finished bracelet will fit correctly, compensate for the diameter of your beads. For round beads, simply add three beads to the measured length of your strand. For any other shape, triple the diameter of one bead and add enough beads to your strand to equal that number. For example, using tube beads with a 3mm diameter and a 5mm length means you’ll need to add two extra beads to your bracelet: 3 x 3mm = 9mm. Two 5mm-long beads will add 10mm to your bracelet length, compensating for the diameter of the beads with 1mm to spare.

  • Christian Bible Scripture Bracelets and Jewelry

Posted on August 10, 2008 by Jen

One of the newest trends I've seen in Christian gifts is Bible Scripture bracelets and jewelry.  The infinity design allows a longer Bible verse to be imprinted around the bracelet or pendant.  By far our best-selling design has been the Lord's Prayer.

These items make great gifts for any Christian lady.  They are also particularly nice when a friend is in need of comforting and healing.  It's a great way to encourage another Christian to stay strong in a difficult time.

  • How to Care for Sterling Silver Jewelry

Posted on August 8, 2008 by Jen

Ever wondered why your sterling silver jewelry tarnished, or how you could prevent sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing?  If you store your sterling silver jewelry in open air, you expose it to air and humidity, which can cause it to tarnish. Tarnishing is normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air and even sunshine. All high quality sterling silver is subject to tarnishing.  it is a common misconception that only sterling silver-plated items or silver-tone items will tarnish.

Tarnishing sometimes first appears as a golden glow and can quickly turn to black. If you wear your jewelry regularly, body oils will help avoid some tarnishing.  This is why your favorite charm bracelet that wear every day might not tarnish, and an item that you wear less often will appear to tarnish more quickly.

To reduce tarnishing, try keeping your sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar or polyethylene.

If your sterling silver jewelry does become tarnished, often you can simply rub your sterling silver jewelry gently with a clean, 100% cotton cloth to remove excess dirt and restore shine. Be sure not to rub too hard, because sterling silver is a soft metal that can be bent and scratched. Rub in a lengthwise motion.

Other helpful tips for keeping your sterling silver jewelry looking great:

    1. Always remove your jewelry before using abrasive chemicals such as bleach, alcohol, etc.
    2. Clean your jewelry before storing it
    3. Prevent tarnishing by cleaning before the silver becomes tarnished
    4. Lotions can wear away at the finish on your sterling silver, so avoid wearing them on surfaces that come in contact with your jewelry
    5. Remove jewelry when doing household chores
