Rings make the perfect gift for just about everyone, but sometimes I’m just clueless when it comes to the gift recipient’s ring size.  Honestly, sometimes I’m fairly clueless about my own ring size, since it changes in winter vs. summer, and I’m never really certain which finger on which I will wear the ring.

The solution: Adjustable rings!  Typically you could only find fashion rings in an adjustable size, but since sterling silver is a relatively “soft” metal, designers have realized that creating sterling silver adjustable rings is easy and sure to last longer.

Shopping for Wedding Jewelry

September 17, 2008 – 7:58 pm by Jen

Amidst the millions of other wedding decisions you are making, sometimes it’s easy to forget about your bridal jewelry.  So for the busy bride, I’ve prepped the following top 5 tips you should keep in mind when shopping for wedding jewelry:

1.  Wait!  Don’t shop for your jewelry until you’ve decided on the dress and headpiece.  It’s a lot easier to find something to match your dress than it is to match a dress to the necklace that you’ve already fallen in love with.

2.  Feel free not to splurge!  Okay, so it’s your wedding and you have every right to spend as much as you want for this important event.  But, at the same time, don’t spend more than you have to.  While everyone is certainly going to notice those stunning earrings you’ve selected, they certainly aren’t going to know if they are CZ or real diamonds.  There are a lot of affordable alternatives, like silver-plated, CZ gemstones, crystals or faux pearls.

3.  Compliment your dress.  There’s no doubt that your dress is the most important part of the outfit, so don’t take away from that - compliment it.  If you are wearing a rather simple dress, feel free to pick something a little more “wow” than what you would typically wear.  On the same note, if your dress is extremely detailed and snazzy, stick with a more basic necklace, earrings and bracelet.

4.  Match! Feel free to purchase each piece separately, but make sure you are sticking with the same general color, gemstone, etc.  For example, if you are wearing a pink pearl necklace, a pink CZ tennis bracelet isn’t going to look as nice as a pink pearl bracelet.  Buying your jewelry as a set is a great way to get your shopping done, and be sure that everything matching perfectly.

5.  Don’t shop at all!  Borrowing jewelry is becoming more popular, especially if it has sentimental value.  Sure, you detest your Mom’s out-of-style wedding gown, but her classic diamond stud earrings might be   the perfect “something old” to add a personal touch to your wedding.

Your Risk for Ovarian Cancer

September 14, 2008 – 6:27 pm by Jen

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share a little information about who is at risk for Ovarian Cancer.  According to the Massachusetts Ovarian Cancer Awareness Coalition, it is estimated that over 16,000 women in the U.S. will die of Ovarian Cancer this year.  No doubt it is important to know the signs and your risks.

If you would like to read more about symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, check out my August article.

According to the National Cancer Institute, a woman that has significant family history of Ovarian Cancer is at a higher risk herself. A close family member can be your:

* Mother
* Father
* Sister
* Brother
* Grandparent (on your mother’s or father’s side)
* Mother’s sister and/or brother
* Father’s sister and/or brother

Having a family history of cancer does not mean you are going to certainly get cancer. Many factors, such as family history and age, may increase a person’s risk of cancer. Unfortunately not all of the causes are known at this time.

To learn more about genetic testing, as well as more details on how genes affect cancer, please visit the National Cancer Institute’s website.

I encourage every woman to talk to her doctor about her risks and the signs of Ovarian Cancer.   This September, help spread the word to family and friends that being aware can significantly increase your chances of early detection, and often, survival.

Choosing Complimentary Shades

August 31, 2008 – 3:54 pm by Jen

With this season’s bright colors, it can be difficult to figure out which colors are complimentary, and which you shouldn’t mix.  Luckily, I found this great color wheel from Real Simple online.  Just go to this link to download the color wheel from the Real Simple website.

Choose colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, or right next to. Stay within the same color (yellow with yellow) or mix with neutrals if you want to play it safe.

Guide to Choosing Earring Length

August 27, 2008 – 6:12 pm by Jen

Ever wonder what kind of earring will compliment your face the most?  I’ve compiled a quick guide on choosing your earring length and style based on the shape of your face:

Oval face: You can wear almost any earring style. Hoops are often the most flattering.

Round face: Choose longer earrings with oblong or straight styles. Earrings with sharp angles balance the curves of the face. Teardrops also flatter round faces.

Square face: Hoops, ovals and small earrings look best. Avoid wearing short and chunky earrings because they make the face appear wider.

Also keep in mind your overall body type: While larger earrings might look great on a taller person, they will not be as flattering on someone with a petite build.

Power Purse Charges Your Cell Phone and iPod

August 23, 2008 – 3:32 pm by Jen

I came across this cool new solar powered purse via an article on Papier Blog. Definitely still needs some style work, but it is a fun new “green” accessory.

Here’s the basics: The purse features mini solar panels embedded into the fabric of the handbag. When you are in the sun, items inside the purse, like your iPod, Blackberry and cell phone, will begin to charge. It’s not as fast as if you were to use your regular charger, but if you are always forgetting to recharge like me, every little bit helps!

It’s being designed by Joe Hyneck, a PhD student at Iowa State University.  It it still being tested at this time, but when it hits the market it should be around $300-$400 according to an article from the Environment News Service.

What a great combination of style of environmentally-friendly features.  I’m keeping my eyes out for when this hits the market!

And speaking of neat iPod accessories, click below to check out ChicBuds, headphones for your iPod featuring genuine Swarovski Crystals:
