  • How to Care for Your Sterling Silver Jewelry

Hopefully you were one of the lucky people to receive a fine quality piece of Charming Chick sterling silver jewelry over the holiday. If you were - or you already own, love and enjoy this gorgeous metal - we have some tips on how to keep it looking it's best. There are just a few things you need to know about silver before we talk about how to care for it.

Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of another metal, which is usually copper or some other alloy. You can tell if a piece of jewelry is Sterling silver because it is commonly stamped with -- 925 or sterling. Silver is much more abundant than gold and platinum, so the price of the piece is largely determined by the craftsmanship and labor involved in its creation.

As some of you may know, over time sterling silver reacts with the sulfur or hydrogen sulfide in the air and the metal can become tarnished. Tarnish (which appears as black patches) occurs when the compound silver sulfide if formed. It is important to note that silver can react poorly when it comes in contact with other things like; rubber gloves, cleaning products, chlorinated water, perfumes, hairsprays, etc.

    How to Reduce Tarnishing:

To reduce tarnishing, we recommend keeping your sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar or polyethylene. Charming Chick stores and ships our jewelry in small zip-lock style bags for this reason. You can continue to store your jewelry in this bag if you wish, or purchase another larger bag for storing your sterling silver collection. If you properly store your sterling silver charms, bracelets, necklaces, anklets, rings, brooches, etc., they will require minimal cleaning to keep that beautiful shine. We also recommend storing it away from other articles that might rub against it and causes scratches. Sometimes wood finishes can contain chemicals that are not good for sterling silver, so avoid storing on wood surfaces.

    Cleaning Sterling Silver Jewelry:
Often you can simply rub your sterling silver jewelry gently with a 100% cotton cloth to remove excess dirt and restore shine. Be sure not to rub too hard, because sterling silver is a soft metal that can be bent and scratched. Also, make sure that the cloth is very clean. Rub in a lengthwise motion, not circular since this can scratch the surfaces. You can use a very soft toothbrush to remove debris in hard to reach crevasses.

If you would prefer to soak your jewelry to remove dirt that seems to be stuck to the surfaces, add a small amount of very mild detergent to warm water. Do not use a detergent with bleach. You can also use a silver paste cleaner, silver dip polishers or silver polishing spray. Often these cleaners can damage gemstones and crystals (especially Swarovski crystal), so we do not recommend using these methods if your jewelry item is not entirely composed of sterling silver.

    Helpful tips:

    1. Always remove your jewelry before using abrasive chemicals such as bleach, alcohol, etc.

    2. Clean your jewelry before storing it

    3. Prevent tarnishing by cleaning before the silver becomes tarnished

    4. Lotions can wear away at the finish on your sterling silver, so avoid wearing them on surfaces that come in contact with your jewelry

    5. Remove your sterling silver jewelry when doing household chores

Following these tips will elp to ensure that you will be able to love and enjoy your sterling silver jewelry for many years to come@

  • Earrings ~ Express Yourself!

Earrings are a girl's best friend! Okay -- maybe diamonds are but earrings have got to be a close second! Every woman should have a nice variety to choose from.  Do you want to know why?

Because your earrings are speaking to people. You may not realize it but it is true.  Sure, for some people they are simply an every day fashion accessory. They put them on each morning without really thinking about it.  However, others might pour over their extensive earring collection trying to select THE perfect pair. Are you trying to send a message with your earrings?

    can be simple,

    or sophisticated.

They can give people clues about you, like:

    you are an animal lover,

    a sports fan,

    you hope for peace,

or that you are a SURVIVOR!

    They can also be festive,

    and fabulous!

Earrings are certainly fashionable and can really add the crowning touch to a favorite outfit.  They are also a great way to compliment any hair style. If you have short hair - or even on days that you wear your hair up, or pulled back - you will really be able to show off your lovely baubles.

If you love your earrings, you'll also want to be sure that you store them properly. You can store them in a  jewelry box  with soft lining. Just hook each pair into each other, so they stay together and are easier to find. Be sure not to lay stones on top of each other. You don't want them rubbing together and getting scratched.

If you have sterling silver earrings, you'll want to store them with anti-tarnish stripes. This will help them to keep them in ready to wear condition. You should have a polishing cloth available though, you can just give them a quick wipe to shine them up quickly.

  • Garnet -- The Birthstone for January

The juicy, red garnet, is the perfect birthstone for the month of January. With its deep red tones, it is a warm contrast to the month it represents. Though the dark reddish-brown garnets are the most common variety; folks born in the month January are quite fortunate to be able to choose from a wide assortment of colors. The reason is, these fantastic gemstones come in just about every color -- and all are acceptable to wear as a birthstone! That should come as great news to anyone who was born in this wonderful (and of course chilly) month.

Some of the varieties of garnet include:

    • Mozambique – is the dark reddish-brown variety.
    • Tsavorite – is a stunning dark green color.
    • Spessartite – is a beautiful orange color.
    • Rhodolite – is the purplish red variety.
    • Ant Hill – described as  “Christmas red.”

Garnets have a long and rich history. It has been recorded, that the early Egyptians used these gemstones to make beautiful bracelets and necklaces as early as 3100 BC! That was a long time ago. Garnets have also been widely used as an abrasive for thousands of years.

The garnet gets its name from the Latin word “garanatus” meaning seed like. The reason is, the dark red stones were associated with the seeds of the pomegranate fruit. Because of this, the ancient Greeks used it as a symbol of a quick return and separated love. There is a Greek myth about Hades giving a pomegranate to Persephone before she left him – to insure her speedy return.

Today garnet is a symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship

At Charming Chick we are pleased to offer several beautiful garnet pieces. We have a striking set of sterling silver chandelier garnet earrings, an amazing oval faceted pendant, and a wonderfully unique garnet leaf ring – any of which would make a fantastic gift for someone with a January birthday.

  • Tips for Organizing and Storing Your Jewelry

Happy 2011 from Charming Chick! The beginning of the New Year, is a perfect time to get organized. As you start getting all of your things cleaned up and in order -- it is very important that you do not forget about orgnanizing your jewelry as well.

Perhaps you were lucky enough to acquire some new treasures over the holiday – if so you probably need to rearrange things a bit to make room for them.

Also, properly storing your jewelry will not only keep it safe and easy to locate; it will also extend the life of your dazzling beauties.

One of first things you'll want to do is to get a jewelry box, so you rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc., don't touch each other or get tangled up. Metal can scratch metal, certain stones can scratch each other and chains can become tangled, kinked or broken.

Here are some tips on keeping your valuables in great condition.

Necklaces should be stored flat or hanging up. This will prevent them from becoming tangled and knotted; which can then weaken the links and cause your chain or necklace to break. Not only will you be left with a broken chain -- but it is also very possible that the bauble you had hanging from it, could become lost or damaged.

Rings should be stored in a box that is lined with a soft material. They should not touch each other if possible -- and any ring that has a stone should be inserted into the ring holder, stone side up.

Earrings can be hooked together so that pairs do not become separated. You can lay them in a lined box and ensure they aren’t touching --  or you can get earring holders; which you can fasten your earrings into.

Sterling Silver when storing sterling silver you’ll want to make sure that it doesn’t become overly tarnished. To do this you can purchase silver protection strips; which can be placed in your jewelry box to prevent to prevent tarnishing. They do this by safely absorbing the sulfur in the air.

Another way to easily maintain your silver is to take it out once a month and polish it with a silver polishing cloth. It’s easy, it keeps your jewelry looking stunning, and it will help prevent permanent damage.

Traveling with your fine accessories also takes some planning and care. There are many soft travel case or jewelry-rolls which are nice for storing your items and keeping it safe from damage. Before you plan your next trip, you should definitely get one of these.

One other thing you must keep in mind when organizing and storing your jewelry -- is to make sure it isn’t ever placed in direct sunlight or anywhere it might be subjected to extreme temperature changes.

And finally, make sure to place your jewelry box in a safe and secure location.

  • Celtic Knot Silver Ring

One of our most popular items is our Celtic Knot Silver Ring.  I often am questioned as to what the celtic knot means, and why a Celtic Knot Silver Ring is so symbolic.

There are many meanings behind the celtic knot, but the basic concept is the same: the knot is never ending and always connected.  There's no starting or stopping point, just endless connectivity.  The concept of 'endless' is not something easily expressed by words, and thus the symbol can better relate such a complex meaning.

  • Buying a Stainless Steel Ring

If you are looking for a stainless steel ring, there are a few things that you may want to consider.  316L stainless steel is hypoallergenic, making it perfect for those that have allergies to other types of metal. It will not break or bend, never changes color and will never tarnish.

Used for body jewelry for many years, stainless steel is becoming one of the biggest new trends in more traditional types of jewelry. With the prices of sterling silver and gold at record highs, stainless steel is not only affordable, but sure to last for many, many years.

A stainless steel ring can be traditional or modern.  Both men and women can wear a stainless steel ring.  Many men have chosen a stainless steel ring for their wedding band so that they do not damage the ring at work, playing sports, etc.

Below is our most popular stainless steel ring, featuring a subtle star pattern.  At such an affordable price, you can see why this stainless steel ring is so popular!

  • Freshwater Pearl Necklace

A classic symbol of elegance, a Freshwater Pearl Necklace is the perfect everyday pearl jewelry.  A freshwater pearl necklace is affordable, and flexible enough to wear with virtually any outfit.  You can dress up a pair of jeans or perfectly compliment your wear-to-work wardrobe.

Freshwater pearls are more common, and thus the less expensive price tag.  They are exactly what the name implies: from fresh water rather than salt water.

The pearl is also the June birthstone.

Check out the beautiful freshwater pearl necklace below at a price you can afford!

  • The Affordable Luxury of Black Onyx

Looking for an affordable gemstone that makes a big impact?  Black Onyx is striking when set in sterling silver, and is much less expensive than similar gemstones.

Black Onyx  is a very popular gemstone in both women’s and men’s jewelry because its black color beautifully complements white metals (such as sterling silver), as well as clear crystals and CZs. Most black onyx on the market today is treated to give it its dark black color. Black onyx can also be faceted or fashioned into beads.
