On October 15, 1898 Zeta Tau Alpha internation women's fraternity was founded by nine young women: Maud Jones Horner, Della Lewis Hundley, Alice Bland Coleman, Mary Jones Batte, Alice Grey Welsh, Ethel Coleman Van Name, Helen M. Crafford, Frances Yancey Smith, Ruby Leigh Orgain and the Virgina State Female Normal School. Several of the women met together regularly. They shared beliefs, education and a sisterhood. They enjoyed each other so much that they wanted to figure out a way that they would be tied to one another forever. According to Wikipedia Maud Jones wrote: “For a whole year before our sorority was established, the need of such an organization was strongly felt. There were six or seven of us who used to frequently meet together and talk over and try to devise some way by which we could unite into a helpful and congenial band. We knew we sadly needed something, but we had no idea how that something was to be found. The beginning of session 1898–1899 our little crowd again at the Normal and just as eager as before, if not more, to find something to satisfy our desires.” The women then took steps to form an organization that would help keep them together and help other women form lifelong bonds. It took a year to get it officially approved but after working to get everything completed Zeta Tau Alpha came to be.

Philanthropy is an important part of of Zeta Tau Alpha life. Some of their previous philanthorpies have been; Currin Valley (Va.) Health Center, Cerebral Palsy Division of the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Easter Seals, Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC).

In 1992 they adopted the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as their national philanthropy and that sponsorship lasted for 19years. However, the women's fraternity wanted to broaden their focus to include other education resources as they relate to breast cancer. Today Zeta Tau Alpha's national philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

  • Sigma Delta Tau ~ Sorority Spotlight

Open Motto: "One hope of many people."
    Mascot: Teddy Bear
    Jewel: Lapis Lazuli
    Colors: CafèAu Lait and Blue
    Flower: Golden Tea Rose

The Sigma Delta Tau sorority was founded March 25th, 1917 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. It was originally named Sigma Delta Phi but was quickly changed when the founders learned that those letters already belonged to another sorority. Although Sigma Delta Tau was founded by seven Jewish women; Dora Bloom Turteltaub, Amy Apfel Tishman, Marian Gerber Greenberg, Grace Srenco Grossman, Inez Dane Ross, Regene Freund Cohane, Lenore Rubinow, there is no religious requirement for membership and the sorority is not affiliated with any particular religious organization.

During that time in history, higher education for women was still a relatively new development and the founders faced struggles because of that; as well as discrimination by other Greek organizations of the time based on their religious affiliation. This is according to the official Sigma Delta Tau website. These obstacles to strengthened their bond and their determination to create a supportive sisterhood to help each other and other women succeed.

    MISSION STATEMENT ~ www.sigmadeltatau.com

The mission of Sigma Delta Tau is to enrich the lifetime experience of women of similar ideals, to build lasting friendships, and to foster personal growth.  Sigma Delta Tau shall encourage each member to reach her fullest potential by providing intellectual, philanthropic, leadership and social opportunities within a framework of mutual respect and high ethical standards.

To achieve these goals, we will:

    • Strive for excellence by providing the best possible service to each chapter and each member.
    • Join as partners with colleges and universities in the pursuit of academic success for our members.
    • Perpetuate our values and traditions while adapting to meet the challenges of the future.
    • Promote lifetime commitment and active involvement as Sigma Delta Tau alumnae.

Helping others is a big part of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority sisterhood. In 1982 Sigma Delta Tau adopted Prevent Child Abuse America as their national philanthropy. They contribute their time, talents and treasure to helping this worthy case. In addition, Sigma Delta Tau also helps Jewish Women International and their literacy initiative; as well as Women for Women International.

  • Phi Sigma Sigma ~ Sorority Spotlight

On November 26, 1913 the Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma was founded at Hunter College in New York. Its 10 founding members; Lillian Gordon Alpern, Josephine Ellison Breakstone, Fay Chertkoff, Estelle Melnick Cole, Jeanette Lipka Furst, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Shirley Cohen Laufer, Claire Wunder McArdle, Rose Sher Seidman, and Gwen Zaliels Snyder had a very clear vision about the type of sorority they wanted to establish. They wanted to establish a nonsectarian sorority and welcomed women of all faiths and backgrounds. In fact, Phi Sigma Sigma was the first collegiate sorority of this kind. The founding members were definitely pioneers of their time.

According to the official Phi Sigma Sigma website, their core values are:

    Lifelong Learning
As new members, as collegiate members and as alumnae, learning is a priority and we encourage our sisters to make the most of educational opportunities at our colleges and in our communities. Through education and challenging ourselves to reach new goals, we become women of influence and substance.

    Inclusiveness
An inclusive sisterhood prepares its members for a world filled with diversity. By embracing our differences, we become a stronger organization that benefits not only our members, but those around us. We seek out and include women of various races, cultures, levels of ability, socioeconomic origin, backgrounds and perspectives.

    Leadership through Service
Phi Sigma Sigma believes that a woman who serves is also a woman who leads. By serving others, our members become more valuable citizens, students, parents, workers and community leaders.

As stated in the Phi Sigma Sigma core values, philanthropy is exceptionally important to teaching leadership. The official philanthropy is the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation. This foundation provides scholarship and educational grants among other assistance for the members and alumnae. The Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation also contributes to the National Kidney Foundation. It's members also work hard to raise funds and donate their time to local organizations as well.

Alpha Sigma Tau sorority was founded on November 4, 1899 at Michigan State Normal College, which is now Eastern Michigan University. At the time of Alpha Sigma Tau's founding, there were three other sororities already on campus; Pi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Nu Phi and Zeta Phi.  The women who founded this sorority - Harriet Marx, Eva O'Keefe, Adriance Rice, Helene M. Rice, Mable Chase, Ruth Dutcher, May Gephart and Mayene Tracy - are said to have been positive visionaries, inspire integrity and were remarkably resourceful.

Alpha Sigma Tau members are  involved in several philanthropic activities. For one, they support Pine Mountain Settlement School, which is in Southeastern Kentucky in the mountains of Appalachia. The school provides a hands on approach to education and provides basic and environmental programs. According to the Alpha Sigma Tau official website the sorority has supported PMSS since 1945 through financial contributions from its members. Some members and alumnae also give of their time and talents by volunteering at the school as well.

"...the following are some of Alpha Sigma Tau's sponsored projects: purchase of major equipment, renovation of campus buildings, purchase of a fifteen-passenger van, and most recently, the endowment of the Pine Mountain Settlement School Intervention Program Fund. These projects support the Pine Mountain Settlement School as it maintains its successful programs and expands the opportunities available to the area.  Alpha Sigma Tau donations are also used to purchase library and audio-visual materials for the Pine Mountain Center. In appreciation of these donations, each item carries a bookplate designating it as a gift from a specific collegiate or alumnae chapter. These bookplates are nature prints designated by Gwen Frostic, a well-known nature artist, environmentalist, and Alpha Sigma Tau."

In June of 2004 the sorority also officially adopted Habitat for Humanity and added it to its National philanthropic service. This is a Christian ministry which helps build houses for families in need. Members volunteer their labor and assist the organization by contributing funds as well.

Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded November 15, 1901 at the Virginia State Female Normal School, which is now Longwood University. During the time of its founding, higher education for women was still a highly debated topic. Because of this, many women who were enrolled in these schools sought out the commandery and support of other women facing the same obstacles. The founders of Alpha Sigma Alpha were searching for the same.

Virginia Lee Boyd-Noell, Juliette Jefferson Hudley-Gilliam, Calva Hamlet Watwon Wootton, Louise Brooks Cox- Carper and Mary Williamson-Hudley had become very good friends and i the fall of 1901 they were recruited and bid by other sororities. However, they quickly realized that this would mean the five friends would not be sorority sisters. So in November of that year they formed AΣA. Early on it was decided that only teacher's colleges or universities and colleges of education within universities.

According to the official Alpha Sigma Alpha website the sorority's purpose as stated in the charter is as follows:

The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mould such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.”

In 1958 Alpha Sigma Alpha's philanthropic focus became aiding the mentally challenged and in 1976 the Special Olympics was named their national project. In 1990 and additional project was added:

"The S. June Smith Center is a private non-profit agency providing early identification, education, training and therapy to infants and children in the Lancaster area with developmental disabilities and delays." via www.alphasiggmaalpha.org

Currently there are 145 Alpha Sigma Alpha chapters and over 100,00 members nationwide.
