New Year's Resolution: Simply Becoming a Better You

New Year’s is the time to reinvent yourself, set goals for the upcoming year and to become a better (or more polished) you. What are some of your goals for 2016?

Deciding to make a big lifestyle change, or just deciding to change something simple in your life can be done any time of the year but one of the most perfect times to start something new is at the beginning of a new year. Whether you want to lose weight, start a new beauty regime or dye your hair a different color, the beginning of 2016 is as good a time as any! A new year can mean a new you.

We, as women, are almost always looking for ways to improve ourselves - whether that is losing weight, wearing different clothes, or setting aside more “me time” - but I want to reiterate the fact that every woman is different, special and beautiful in their own way.

Whatever goals that you decide to set for 2016, be sure to keep in mind that taking care of yourself should be a high priority. Here are some common (and pretty simple) resolution suggestions to help you become a better you in 2016!

Take care of yourself
First and foremost, taking care of yourself should always be one of your first priorities. If you take care of yourself, you will be able to help others better and have a positive attitude for life! A few ways you can do this are listed below.

Make Healthier Food Choices
One of the most common New Year’s resolutions for women is to lose weight or to get in better shape. This can often be done through dieting but dieting can be frustrating and discouraging, and having to count your calorie intake isn’t something we all want to spend time doing.

Losing weight doesn’t always have to be done through dieting and it doesn’t mean that you can never have another candy bar again or that you will have to refrain from having a delicious slice of pizza for the rest of the year. You can lose some weight and start feeling better by simply making healthier food choices.

Instead of cutting out whole food groups from your diet, try to lower the amount of unhealthy food you eat and make healthier food choices! Making healthier choices can be as easy as choosing to eat whole wheat bread over white bread, or choosing to have a smoothie for dessert instead of a milkshake. There are many healthier alternatives that can satisfy your cravings!

Diversify Your Wardrobe
Some of us tend to get in a fashion rut throughout the year but a new year is the best time to pick yourself up and make a wardrobe that you love. Whether you are a fashionista or could care less about clothes, you probably are aware that how you dress does indeed affect how you feel.

Have you ever put on a new, gorgeous dress and noticed how amazing you felt? There is potential for that to happen everyday! If you feel like you are in a fashion rut, try shopping at new stores in 2016. Try wearing different colors and trying out new silhouettes. You could finally buy the cute hate that you’ve been eyeing but have been too afraid to wear (PS - I bet you will pull it off flawlessly!) You may be surprised at how much one little red dress could change your life!

Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is one of the most popular and easiest ways to keep your skin and body in healthy condition. Your body is made up of about 60% of fluids which means you should be drinking an adequate amount of liquids to maintain and replenish your body’s water levels. The recommended water intake is eight 8 ounce cups of water a day. By staying hydrated, you will help to maintain your normal bodily functions and prevent dehydration, suppress your food cravings (and help with weight loss), and keep your complexion looking great. And we all know that when your body feels good and your complexion looks flawless, you just feel a bit more confident about yourself!

Spend Time Outdoors
Research has shown that the average American spends about 93% of their life inside! Of course this is different for every person but for the most part, that sounds pretty depressing. Only 7% of our lives are spent outdoors?! This lack of time spent outdoors can end up being a huge problem since being outside is known to have many beneficial effects on your body.

Allocating time to be outside, in general, is a good practice to follow but being outside and exercising is even better for your morale! Any activity - from simply taking a walk on your lunch break to something more intense like rock climbing - can help to boost creativity, improve your mood and increase your Vitamin D levels, all of which leave you feeling better about yourself!

Be a “Yes” Woman!
If you have ever seen the movie “Yes Man”, starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, you probably know the premise behind being a “yes” woman. Basically, the movie is about a ‘boring’ guy who never does anything fun and just mopes around. He doesn't like his job, his wife recently left him and all he wants to do is be depressed. Well, he and ends up getting ‘hypnotized’ into thinking that he must say yes to everything he is asked to do and when he starts saying yes, his life changes for the better - and I won’t give any more details away in case you haven’t seen it yet!

So again, this if you feel like you may be in some sort of life rut or one of your resolutions for 2016 is to be more spontaneous, become a “yes” woman! Go on dates, go on adventures, spend time with your girl friends, and do things you’ve never done before! If someone asks you to try something new, say yes! You never know when one unplanned night could lead you down the path of the best year ever.

Meditating is a common task that most of us forget to do. Meditating is a time for you to gather your thoughts, sort through your feelings and maybe just some much needed alone time. For those of us in a fast paced life, finding time to be alone can be difficult. We live in a world where people are impatient and always have something important to do and we often forget to take time for ourselves.
