February 2, 2009 – 5:14 pmWe all love Valentine’s Day, but here’s a couple of fast facts about Valentine’s Day that you may not already know:
- Valentine’s Day is named after several early Christian martyrs named Valentine
- No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs
- The first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland of Massachusetts
- Approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide
